The Great Catsby by B.K. Baxter

Title:The Great Catsby (A NOLA Tail Mystery #1)
Author:
B.K. Baxter
Genre: Cozy Mystery, Thriller

My Review Rating: ★★★★
Goodreads Description:
Watch what you wish for… Some inheritances are literally death.
My life has been turned upside down by my inheritance, but my only complaint is the cat that came along with the new house. I swear he’s judging me as I settle in and try to make new friends in my new small-town Louisiana neighborhood. And just when I start to settle into my new job and get back to reading my classic novels, I’m pulled chapters deep into a mystery. The Beauty Queen in the town has been offed. Someone has killed the darling.
Wouldn’t you know it? An innocent man has been framed. I shouldn’t get involved, but somehow, my cat seems to have a way with finding clues in some of my favorite stories. Not that any of that makes sense.
Why would it? The cat is the sleuth, I’m the amateur, and we have alligators in the backyard. Throw in a dead body, a book club that’s filled with suspicious characters, and you have my new life. And I thought being a librarian in Louisiana was going to be dull.

Hey! I stumbled upon a very interesting book and I know you’ll like it, too! I was looking for a ~free~ copy of the Great Gatsby on Amazon, but this free ebook was recommended to me instead. I don’t usually read excerpts or book descriptions, not to mention descriptions from random books, but for some reason I felt like I should give this a try. So I learned The Great Catsby is the first book of a three-book series inspired by three classic books.  And as your girl is a sucker for classic reads, I thought why not read this and the classic book they’re inspired by?

I started reading this book when we went to Intramuros for a (failed) picnic. This pic was taken when we're enjoying our coffee at Papa Kape in Fort Santiago. Click here to read more.

I’m super excited to bring you along with me as I read the whole series (mehehe). I have published the first part on my channel linked at the bottom of this page. I am not a fan of completing a series straight, but my curiosity for the next books is just soooo high I bought the next two.

“We cats were more refined. We didn't have owners. We had roommates.”
B.K. Baxter, The Great Catsby

The Great Catsby follows Jade, a new resident of a small town called Beulah. She inherited the plantation house she’s now living in, and I’m happy for her (and jealous kind of) cos this house has a library and I am imagining it as my dream library, excuse me, Baxter. As we work as an assistant librarian she thought initiating a local book club wound be fun, so she did arrange a call for book club members. Just after the first night of their meeting, one of the book club members was murdered. And being the chismosa that she is, Jade tries to discover who the real murderer is.

Fortunately, Jade has a cat. She calls him Chonks. And to me, he’s pretty smart. Chonks thinks he’s super intelligent that in a way he look at hoomans as is they’re a little bit slow. He witnessed some things around town, that are kind of private to some eyes. And he knows who the killer is. He puts up clues as to who the real murderer is but Jade is such a stupid little girl who can’t make sense of what Chonks is doing.

It was a super fun read, effortlessly funny. Like street funny, stupid funny, idk how can I describe it better. Especially when we’re in the point of view of Chonks who’s really, really cute. It’s a shame though that we only got what two or three chapters from Chonks? I am hoping for more Chonks POVs in the next books, since they’re marketing it as “Classics but with Cats”.

I am using the CAWPILE rating system, though please remember a reader’s taste may change from time to time, so I’m not sure if you can trust me here unless this was a recent read. Leaving my ratings anyways because this was totally how I felt the time I read this book. *winks*

The Cat’s Sure in the Rye (A NOLA Tail Mystery #2) by B.K. Baxter

Bodies are piling up, and I’m in charge of figuring out why. I can’t help it! There are innocent people being accused. And don’t get me started on the heat and humidity in Beulah. The thick cloud of death is only surpassed by the constant hot flashes induced by the weather. I could keep going. I should actually. After almost being killed by a history-obsessed realtor that wanted my inherited house for herself, I’m ready to get out of Dodge. Unfortunately, this new situation is a bit more personal in nature. A guy that disappeared a decade ago was discovered dead in this new case. Where has he been for the last ten years? And one of my friends just happens to have the murder weapon. You can’t make these things up. Not even in the pages of a good mystery novel. Speaking of books, my new book club is at the center of my thoughts as the judgmental kitty and I traverse this new mystery. The members of the club are fan-girling over the town’s new resident, but the man is up to no good! I can feel it. With all this craziness, it isn’t easy being a sleuth right now, but Chonks will help me navigate the twists and turns of this gritty mystery, as long as we’re home in time for his dinner. That is a must. Read more on Goodreads >>
